Scholarships

Every year the Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday Observance Committee grants scholarships to High School Seniors in Arlington who exemplify the spirit of  Dr. King through their leadership and dedication to social justice. Students should identify as Black/African American.

2025 Scholarship Winners

Jaylah Thomas

Arlington High School 2025

Attending Simmons University

Majoring in Psychology

 

Very curious about the workings of the human brain, Jaylah is motivated to work hard and learn all she can at Simmons. She is inspired to become a psychologist and make a meaningful impact on society by helping people to be their best selves. Jaylah’s maturity, motivation and positive influence on her peers were highlighted in her recommendations. Jaylah was an influential member of the Black Student Union and an inspiration to younger students in the METCO program who commute by bus from Boston to attend school in Arlijngton.

Nazir Canty

Arlington High School 2025

Attending Georgia Southern University then Georgia Institute of Technology

Majoring in Engineering

 

Curious about aerospace and biomedicine, Nazir is pursuing a mechanical engineering degree. He says he may become a doctor with a specialty in robotics. What he is certain of is that he wants to make a big difference. Down the road, he has ambitious plans to collaborate with fellow engineers and advance how the world works.

His teachers admire his drive, intellect, character and exceptional leadership. As president of the Black Student Union, Nazir's empathy, diplomacy, and problem-solving skills led to inclusive and productive meetings, focused on actionable outcomes. He earned the respect of his peers and admiration from fellow METCO students.
